Bike DC 2012 videos

Both Scott and I had a blast riding in BikeDC this morning. I have scads of photos to edit and upload. In the meantime, here are some shakey-cam videos from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Parkway in Mclean, VA, and the westbound lanes of the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge over the Potomac River.

I'm kind of kicking myself for not taking some video along the Rock Creek Parkway because that section was bee-you-tiful. On the other hand, we were still pretty much in a pack and I needed both hands on the bars and brakes both going up and coming back down. Next year, I'll actually use the camera mount I put on my handlebar.

This is totally a bikeyface. (I was too happy to be at all self-conscious about my braces.)

  1. They didn't let people go to the Iwo Jima or Air Force Memorials when I was riding today. Nobody directed us to the finish either. The ride was still fun but somewhat frustrating.

    1. Oh my goodness, the biggest rest stop was at the Air Force Memorial. Did you get on the road later than planned? As we were riding back to the Roosevelt Bridge -- I guess it was a little after 10am based on having gotten to the finish line just before 10:30 -- a police car rolled down 110 to warn us that the roads would be opening soon and we'd have to ride on the sidewalk if we didn't pick up the pace.

We got a little frustrated at some choke points, especially on the ramp from 50 to Meade where we finally joined the "family ride" participants. The road naturally narrows there and was split in half for bike traffic going both ways and kids were veering left and right. The entire ride -- well, walk for me -- down Marshall to IJM was harrowing with, again, narrow road split in half and little ones.

That said, I had a blast and am looking forward to next year's ride. Hopefully, our paths will cross before then. :)

  2. That ride sounds like fun and worth a trip, May is such a beautiful month in DC. I'll need to check out information on the ride. I liked your videos, they really added a lot to the post and to caputre a real feel for being there. What kind of camera were you using?

    1. It was a LOT of fun. It wasn't without snafus, unfortunately, but we're both looking forward to riding again next year, and I hope that my girlfriends with bicycles will have the stamina to ride with us.

Most of my photos and the two videos are from a Kodak Easyshare Mini. I was happily surprised by how good a job it did in taking the video and capturing the sound. I assumed the wind noise had drowned me out. Of course, I did have the camera up close to my mouth most of the time. :)

I have a handlebar mount for my camera and I'll have to remember to use that the next time I want to shoot video. And I'll need to swipe Scott's Flip Mino HD to shoot longer videos as well.

    2. Okay Melanie, you have inspired me to try to take video whilst riding. I've taken a couple of really decent photos while riding now comes the video. I just need to get well enough to ride.
